The combined effect of eight weeks of water exercise and resistance training on headache indicators, quality of life and sleep quality of women with migraine

Abstract

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the combined effect of eight weeks of water exercise and resistance exercise on headache indicators, quality of life and sleep quality of women with migraine.
Methods & Materials: 40 women with migraine in the age range of 40 to 50 years were selected as available sampling and were randomly divided into four groups: water exercise, resistance exercise, combined exercise and control group (10 people in each group). At first, research variables were evaluated with standard tools. The experimental groups participated in special exercises for eight weeks, and during this period, the control group only did their daily activities and avoided participating in sports activities. After completing the sports training, the research variables were re-evaluated in the same conditions as the pre-test.
Results: The results showed that eight weeks of training (combined and separate) has a significant effect on the intensity, duration and frequency of headaches in women with migraine. All three types of exercise in water, resistance exercise and combined exercise reduced the intensity of headache in women with migraine. Also, eight weeks of combined exercise had a significant effect on the quality of life and sleep quality of women with migraine.
Conclusion: It seems that three types of exercises in water, resistance and combined, are effective in reducing headache indicators, improving quality of life and sleep quality in female patients with migraine.
