The protective effect of chicory during eight weeks of resistance training on TNF-α and IL-6 genes’ expression in the kidney tissue of female wistar rats consuming testosterone enanthate

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of chicory against the damages caused by testosterone enanthate on the genes expression levels of cytokines tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the kidney tissue of female wistar rats during eight weeks of resistance training.
Materials and Methods: In this experimental research, 22 female wistar rats were randomly divided into 3 groups 1) training group + placebo (sham), 2) training group + testosterone enanthate, 3) training group + testosterone enanthate + chicory. became all three groups performed resistance training for eight weeks. Rats of groups 2 and 3, received 20 mg/kg testosterone enanthate intramuscular injection three days a week. Also group 3, received chicory extract at the rate of 6 grams per kilogram of body weight in the form of gavage three times a week. The expression genes in kidney tissue was measured by Real-Time PCR method. The data was analyzed using SPSS 21 software and one-way analysis of variance and Bonferroni's post hoc test (p≤0.05).
Results: The expression of TNF-α and IL-6 genes in the training group + testosterone enanthate was significantly higher than the training group + placebo (P<0.0001). The training group + testosterone enanthate + chicory significantly decreased the expression of TNF-α and IL-6 genes expression compared to the training group + testosterone (P<0.0001).
Conclusion: It seems that the consumption of chicory has an effective role in reducing the side effects caused by the consumption of testosterone enanthate in rats.
